Week One, Not a Weak One

Some exciting games headline week one of NFL action

The NFL season came back into our lives today and needless to say, we are all happier.

Jaguars @ Titans

Exciting games like the “upset” game where the Tennessee Titans defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Titans win the game despite and injury (and bad game) to Vince Young and another injury (and good game) to the surprisingly good Chris Johnson.

Titans win 17-10 despite going 3-13 on third down. VY was 12 of 22 for 110 yards and 2 picks (offset by one throwing TD). The Titans defense held the Jags and their two-headed running game to just 33 rushing yards (their fewest since October of 2006).

Not only that but the Titans managed seven sacks and picked David Garrard twice (remember that Garrard only threw three all of last season). Cortland Finnegan had both of the INTs after having one in his first two NFL seasons.

Fantasy Impact: It’s early, but if you have both of the QBs from this game, reconsider. And if the Titans defense is available, pick them up.

Tampa Bay @ New Orleans

Another hurricane hits New Orleans and then the next game in the Super Dome is a win for the Saints.

Drew Brees has a big day and… wait for it… so does Mr. Reggie Bush. Lets try that again, and so does Reggie Bush.

Brees throws for 343 yards and three TDs. Bush catches eight passes for 112 and a TD. Most of those yards were after the catch (like they should be Reggie).

The Bucs made a late run and were in position to take the lead, but like he does, Jeff Garcia threw a pick and the Saints win 24-20.

Fantasy Impact: Both defenses played great, think of them as a bye week fill in. Grab Brees and watch Bush because he is known for his “flash in the pan” type games like this one.

Other Games:

Kansas City @ New England

New England loses Tom Brady to a knee injury but wins the game over Kansas City 17-10

Fantasy Impact: One and done? Watch Brady, I think something is seriously wrong in the leg department and check out the backup running back for KC behind Larry Johnson, rookie Jamaal Charles

UPDATE 9:54 PM: CBSSPORTSLINE.com is reporting that Tom Brady may be done for the season after the injury to his knee in the game against the Chiefs.

Houston @ Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh gets three TDs and 138 yards from Willie Parker and win over Houston 38-17

Fantasy Impact: Get Parker obviously, but check out Steve Slaton from the Texans. With the injury prone Ahman Green and Chris Brown on that depth chart, expect Slaton to move up

New York Jets @ Miami

The Jets christen the USS Brett Favre with a close win over the Dolphins 20-14. Favre throws for 194 yards and two TDs

Fantasy Impact: Thomas Jones uses the attention on Favre to run for 101 yards and a TD. Can you say sleeper?

St. Louis @ Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a dark horse for the Super Bowl. Today was great example of what that offense can do with a healthy McNabb. He throws for 361 yards and three TDs without his top two receivers (Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown)

Fantasy Impact: Without Brown and Curtis DeSean Jackson and Greg Lewis played huge. Lewis is fourth on that depth chart and is benefiting from those injuries. But Jackson is the real deal, even with Curtis and Brown in the lineup

Dallas @ Cleveland

The Browns were overmatched and couldn’t find their groove against that scary good secondary of the Cowboys and Dallas win 28-10. Tony Romo throws for 310 yards and a TD

Fantasy Impact: Marion Barber may have hurt his rib cage (no fracture) and Felix Jones stepped up in his place. And watch out for big tight end Jason Witten

Carolina @ San Diego

Carolina holds LaDainian Tomlinson scoreless and under 100 yards. That’s a win there, but to sweeten the deal they actually win the game on a last second touchdown throw from Jake Delhomme to Dante Rosario. Panthers with 26-24

Fantasy Impact: You are one game closer to having Steve Smith back from the suspension and check out Jake “The Snake” Delhomme as a backup (or even a starter in big leagues, 247 yards and a TD against the Chargers is good considering last year was a wash due to injury)
