Not to be outdone... Merriman and Colston attempt to upstage Brady and Young

Shawne Merriman, in an attempt to show the NFL that there are more players in the league than just Tom Brady, pulled the plug on his 2008 season when he told the Chargers that he will have surgery on the two torn ligaments in his left knee.

According to Michael Kaplan, an ESPN medical analyst:

"This is major surgery with a long and difficult rehabilitation of nine months plus. It was folly to think he could make it through the season unrepaired. His future after recovery is optimistic for full return to football without limitation."

So now, just like Brady, Merriman is out for the year as well. Boy with those injuries and the Colts embarrassing loss to the Bears, the AFC is wide open.

And not half of a day later, Marques Colston will miss four to six weeks recovering from surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb.

The 1,000 yard receiver is a big loss for the Saints who will now have to rely on Devery Henderson and David Patten.

Hopefully, this NFL season won't have many more weeks like this one. Four high-profile players get hurt for a sizable amount of time.
