So Close

The Ohio University Bobcats came into Saturday’s game as huge underdogs. Few people, including myself, actually believed they stood any chance against the almighty Buckeyes. However, it became clear quite immediately that they would not be intimidated. After three quarters, they were still leading 14-12, but that lead eventually gave way to a 26-12 victory for the third ranked Buckeyes. Although it was a sad moment for a small team from Athens, Ohio that fought valiantly, they should view this game as a victory

The Bobcats played three-quarters of the game with Boo Jackson leading the team. Although he is a highly-touted JUCO player from California, he had never experienced an atmosphere like Ohio Stadium. Overall, his stats were fairly sub-par (9-25-86yds-3int.), he consistently dodged an onslaught of pass rushers to turn nothing into something.

Furthermore, the Bobcats’ secondary controlled Ohio State’s receiving corps. All-American receiver Brian Robiskie had 3 catches for 8 yards. Also, the undersized OU defensive line controlled the mammoth Ohio State linemen the entire game.

Finally, the Bobcats turned the ball over 5 times, but what if they could have cut that total in half? The costliest was the fumble on the punt return, which set the Buckeyes up for the go ahead touchdown. It was clear at that point that all luck had gone away.

This game was amazing, and no one can dispute that. As a lifelong Buckeyes fan and alum of Ohio University, I was in a predicament before the game. Who should I root for? Ultimately, I decided to go with the ‘Cats, and they did not disappoint. Although it would have ruined the Buckeyes’ chance of playing in a third national championship game, I prayed and hoped that OU would go home the victor. Even though they eventually lost, I was proud to walk around Columbus yesterday wearing the green and white of Ohio University.
