Steve McNair 1973-2009

Fireworks and grieving got in the way of doing this earlier. Steve McNair was my favorite quarterback of all-time. I am only 23 years old but the majority of my life I spent watching the McNair led Oilers/Titans. Javon Kearse, Eddie George, Jeff Fisher and Steve McNair became household names because of their success. Including this one moment, its tough for me to look at....

The 2003 NFL MVP was known for being one of the toughest players around and arguably the toughest quarterback to lace em' up. Broken and torn things couldn't get in the way of "Air" McNair.

You all know the story and I won't get into all of that. People say he wasn't a Nashville icon and he just did the philanthropy because the NFL made him. Ridiculous, McNair and fellow Mississippi native Brett Favre were two of the first high-profile people their to help the recovery of Hurricane Katrina that ravaged the area.

These instances and their implications and meanings are hard to explain, understand and convey to others. I was shaken by this. For one, because he was the leader of my favorite team as a kid. I was in Nashville from the first day of the Oilers and I am still a diehard. I was hoping Steve would mentor Vince Young and make him a better player but there was a failing out. And they played against each other instead.

Like I mentioned, I was upset about this because it was sudden and I never thought McNair would ever be in a situation like this. He wasn't sick and he wasn't PacMan Jones, to me he was the ultimate gentleman and gamesman. I thought my favorite athletes would pass much later in my life. But today is a far different and darker today.

He was a class act and hopefully what ever this turns out to be doesn't soil what a great career and life he led. He was taken away way to soon. Hell if he wanted to play some more, I've been watching Canadian Football lately, and although they would only be able to pay him in Tim Horton's gift certificates, he still has enough left in the tank to play the game.

Thank you Steve for making me love Tennessee Titan football and being a positive figure during your playing days. You are missed.

Even The CFL Misses Michael Jackson

Toronto Argonauts receiver Arland Bruce pays tribute to MJ by playing dead. And he got two" objectionable conduct" penalties. The CFL penalties sound like courtroom decisions.

That is not even the best part of the video. Toronto apparently doesn't know enough small Irish guys to be kickers... so the running back gave a go at the extra point. That running back, the son of Walter Payton, Jarrett Payton.

Jarrod Yost, my good friend from Oklahoma University says "The Big Stimulus." I appreciate the concern for Cleveland but that would have to be a BIG stimulus.

Drew Mojzer, a fellow Ohio University grad and a native of the Cincinnati area says Shaq's new nickname should be "Big River Fire." To which I say, Cincinnati has bad sports teams.... wait that doesn't work coming from a Clevelander.

Mike Tomlinson, another fellow OU grad says "The Cleveland Steamer." Thanks Mike, way to sneak that in there.

Things Like That Hurt

Cleveland, as a city is in need of something. Like Detroit and other smaller Mid Western cities, a championship of some sort would help, if only for a while.

Cleveland, because of all of this, doesn't deserve a championship from the Cavs just because. They must earn it. But how does a team with the best home record, one of the best road records, the best over all record and swept both of the first two playoff series by at least 10 points lose like this.

They aren't getting blown out and still have a chance to win this series, but last night's Game 4 was sickening to say the least. The Fumble, The Drive and Jose Mesa, I won't go on and on about those nightmares of Cleveland lore, but Cleveland teams always get so (too) close and then it is all taken away from us.

1995 and 1997 World Series, numerous AFC Championships and the 2007 NBA Championship, promising Cleveland romps through the playoffs in my short 23 year life. From word go, this 2008-2009 Cavs team was looking like a team of memories and a reason to say "Yeah, I'm from Cleveland."

I can't put into words the pain that many older Cleveland fans have gone through, I just know that the things I have seen would haunt all of the Boston and New York sports fans for life. Sure the Red Sox had that lengthy drought, but now its win and win often. And the Celtics and Patriots have picked up the slack. And NY sports fans have NO reason to complain about missing the playoffs or blowing a game.

No on to the actual game in question. I can sum it up with a single picture. STEP UP Z, you can't hide under the basket anymore.

Game one difference- one point, game two- one point and game four- two points. Throw in that game three 10 point loss by the Cavs and this has been a close series. Ready for the ifs? Because three of the four games have come down to the last possession and shot.

If Mo Williams made that buzzer beater in game one, If Lebron missed the game two miracle and if Zydrunas Ilgauskas could only guard Dwight Howard.

Game five, is always important. In most series its either a series clincher or a way to separate the two teams. For the Orlando Magic its a clincher, for the Cavs, a lifeline.

Orlando has played a great series and playoffs for that matter. Cleveland doesn't matchup well but has made defensive adjustments to try and tread the dangerous water. But the fact remains that the Cavs are missing shots, dribbling too much and there is no movement from the four without the ball. Watching the second half offense feels like drowning.

I'll be watching, as a fan I have to. But they are only so many superstitious things I can do. Jersey on, then off, I'm standing, I'm sitting, I'm doing jumping-jacks, I'm across the street. I can't win this on my own Cavs.

I bit my nails so much last night, I made myself bleed and didn't even notice.

Steph Curry is going pro, we all know this. But as it turns out, Curry is going through a hard time right now. He can't get over how great the Commons is and he shows his love while taking part in a remake of Asher Roth's song "I Love College." Bad becomes worse.

THIS MOCK IS WITHOUT TRADE UPS AND DOWNS, EVERYONE HOLDS THEIR PICK SPOT

1. Detroit Lions - Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia - WHY? Football intelligence, think Matt(y) "Ice" Ryan. It worked for Atlanta, Ryan helped that program turn a corner. Michael Turner didn't hurt but I have high hopes for Kevin Smith in Detroit.

2. St. Louis Rams - Jason Smith, OT, Baylor - WHY? Best OL and the best OL helps keep Steven Jackson and Mark Bulger alive. And with Orlando Pace gone, you need to replace him. Too bad he couldn't mentor Smith.

3. Kansas City Chiefs - Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest - WHY? Works in any defensive scheme that the Chiefs use next year. Great pure pass rusher. Plus its another case of best player available and last year with the drafting of Glenn Dorsey, D is key in KC.

4. Seattle Seahawks - Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia - WHY? Some say that Mark Sanchez is the heir apparent to Matt Hasselbeck, he was hurt, not dead. His WR corp was devastated with injuries last year and with the running game drying up, time to beef up that line. Plus Walter Jones' knees are jelloing.

5. Cleveland Browns - Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech - WHY? Because I hope so... A big play receiver that will be all of that word BIG with the trading of Braylon Edwards to the Giants. Its a rebuilding year for the Browns and if they don't trade Braylon, than they will draft DT B. J. Raji here instead.

6. Cincinnati Bengals - Andre Smith, OT, Alabama - WHY? Another character guy... kidding, but he fits the need and with the other OTs off the board, someone needs to keep Carson Palmer in as few pieces as possible. Plus Cedric Benson showed some promise for the running game.

7. Oakland Raiders - Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri - WHY? Because its a WR and the Raiders... Need I say more. I will. New QB Jeff Garcia needs a new toy (leave out gay jokes) and the speed of Jeremy Maclin will help a traditional scrambler in Garcia.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars - Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State - WHY? My first reach of the draft, Jacksonville is known to do this so it helps. Last year the JAX picked DE Derrick Harvey from Florida 8th, a stretch yes, but it filled a need and that is what this is all about. CB is a need with age being an issue, the CBs are either older or too young and were later round picks or free agents. Picking up Tory Holt fixed the WR issue (sort of, but enough for now).

9. Green Bay Packers - Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas - WHY? He is versatile and anchors AJ Hawk up the middle with a lot of speed and massive strength on the edge. The Pack offense is set and scored way more points then any other NFC North team. Opponents averaged more yards on the ground than the Pack and teams were a staggering 74% on fourth down against that run defense.

10. San Fransisco 49ers - Mark Sanchez, QB, USC - WHY? JT O'Sullivan is now Carson Palmer's back-up in Cincy and Alex Smith is still a fugitive to the Niners' fans. So here is your more obvious use of the phrase "heir apparent." He is smart and will have a stronger running game to work around.

11. Buffalo Bills - Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee - WHY? Yes, he had a big year and a huge Senior Bowl to help his draft stock. But the Vols churn out defense. Justin Harrell two years ago in the first round to the Packers and last year Jerod Mayo to the Pats in the first round at pick 10. The Bills need a C/G but its too early for that, so Ayers helps that pass rush.

12. Denver Broncos - Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU - WHY? The Broncos also need a young QB but that will have to wait until later. The Broncos always have a good running game, but stopping the run is another story. They gave up 28 pts/game last year and 146 yards on the ground per game. A DE won't necessarily stop the inside run, (although Jackson is known to fight inside) but if the back does outside, expect Jackson to hunt.

13. Washington Redskins - Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State - WHY? Last in the NFC East won't cut it in Washington. Giving up 193 yards a game through the air won't either. The run D was incredible, giving up just 96 a game. An end with some speed will help shake things up for that D-Line that now is stacked with the best DT in the game, Albert Hanyesworth.

14. New Orleans Saints - Brian Cushing, OLB, USC - WHY? OLB is a need for New Orleans. They don't give a lot on the ground with Jonathan Vilma and Scott Fujita but Cushing is versatile and would learn under some good ILB about finding and attacking the ball on outside run plays, a weakness of NO.

15. Houston Texans - Louis Delmas, SS, Western Michigan - WHY? Reach number two, Delmas is good against the run and he is one of the few players I actually saw in person. He is for real, yes a MAC safety, but a run stuffer and a decent coverage guy. The Texans have the coverage part taken care of with six picks between Dunta Robinson and Jacques Reeves.

16. San Diego Chargers - Rey Maualuga, LB, USC - WHY? Stephen Cooper needs a friend out there. Cooper was second in tackles for the Chargers and with Shaun Phillips and Shawne Merriman covering the outside, ILB are a need for the Chargers. He also helps a LB corp with pass coverage.

17. New York Jets - Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland - WHY? Laveranues Coles is gone to fail in Cincinnati and the Jets did a good job in the offseason on the defensive side of the ball adding Jim Leonhard and Lito Sheppard. So a good young reciever under Jerricho Cotchery will help make Thomas Jones' and more importantly, Kellen Clemens' job easier.

18. Denver Broncos (from Chicago) - Josh Freeman - WHY? They got their DE at pick 12, now its time to build. Josh Freeman has an arm and will benefit from that incredible run game and can regenerate even with injuries. Big- play receivers like Brandon Marshall will help the big arm of Freeman feel at home.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers -Everette Brown, OLB/DE, FSU - WHY? He is a combo that will help out Gaines Adams on the other side. Has a big upside, just may be a little small for DE, but the speed is there to make him a threat.

20. Detroit Lions (From Dallas- Roy Williams trade) - Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss - WHY? Last year it was Atlanta taking Matt Ryan early in the first round and then they followed it up with OL Sam Baker. That worked out. (again, it helps to have Michael Turner) You can never have enough O-Lineman.

21. Philadelphia Eagles - Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia - WHY? Brian Westbrook will be 30 next year. Now its not time to take him out back and Ol' Yeller him, but with the departure of Correll Buckhalter, there needs to be a back up in place.

22. Minnesota Vikings - Eben Britton, OT, Arizona - WHY? That run game is blessed with a stud in Adrian Peterson, so keeping him healthy should be on the forefront for the Vikes. It may be a slight reach, but Britton is the best available player at a position that they need to address with the departure of Matt Birk (C is a reach here too).

23. New England Patriots - Clay Matthews, OLB, USC - WHY? Jerod Mayo worked out as a quality ILB, now its time to find a OLB to play along side Adalius Thomas, Mayo and Tedy Bruschi. Plus this helps them stay and feel younger.

24. Atlanta Falcons - Evander “Ziggy” Hood, DT, Missouri - WHY? Intangibles, why else? They almost went with Glenn Dorsey over Matt Ryan last year, so why not get your DT this year. A lot of energy and the Atlanta 4-3 fits well.

25. Miami Dolphins - Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois - WHY? Andre Goodman bolted as a free agent and Will Allen is due to hit the open market next offseason. Might as well take the 2nd best CB this year with a great CB skill set. And with the 8 picks between Goodman and Allen last year, some one needs to step in.

26. Baltimore Ravens - Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State - WHY? That run game always is refreshing, keeping it tip-top. A position that would help that process is TE and as Todd Heap drifts out of importance and L.J. Smith comes in as a back up, Pettigrew would have time to grow and learn. The Ravens are pretty set, another year out of Flacco will just make them that much better.

27. Indianapolis Colts - Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss- WHY? Jerry can fill those run gaps well but must stay healthy. They don'thave any studs in the middle of their d-line to begin with. Then Quinn Pitcock unexpectedly retired last summer their depth took a hit. And not only did Indianapolis rank 24th in the league against the run in 2008 but they only got two sacks from all of their defensive tackles combined.

28. Buffalo Bills (from Carolina through Philadelphia) - Cornelius Ingram, TE, Flroida - WHY? The got their DE with Ayers at pick 11. Now address the new passing game. Terrell Owens is there and with Pettigrew off the board, Ingram is the next best thing. Ingram would be the number one TE if he didn't tear his ACL and not play at all in 2008 for Florida.

29. New York Giants - Larry English, OLB/DE, Northern Illinois - WHY? The Giants will get Braylon Edwards from the Browns and will not need a WR here. So they go D-Line and pick up a lateral mover that can track the run across the line and to the outside. The pass defense for the Giants gave up almost 200 yards a game last year and need this speed off the edge.

30. Tennessee Titans - Percy Harvin, WR, Florida - WHY? The Titans need a receiver. Missing out on Holt hurts a lot more than most people think. Nate Washington is the veteran leader of the WR corp, so with the emergence of Chris Johnson and the running game and Kerry Collins' play, receiving is key this time. PLEASE

31. Arizona Cardinals - Chris “Beanie” Wells, RB, OSU - WHY? The Edge is done and Tim Hightower can carry the load, but a third-down bruiser like Wells could make the Cardinals' run game as multifaceted as the passing game.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers- Darius Butler, CB, UConn - WHY? They lost Bryant McFadden as a free agent and now CB is a concern. Davis is a very impressive physical specimen with a chiseled physique and an ideal blend of size and speed. Brother of 49ers' TE Vernon Davis, this guy has a ton of up side.

NOTES:
Watch out for Ramses Barden a 6'6 229 receiver out of Cal Poly. Maybe second round or the third.
James Laurinaitis is a great value for Detroit with the first pick of the second round
Brian Robiskie is the best route runner in the draft could be an Anthony Gonzalez type third guy for a team in the 2nd round

Pilot Who Landed In Water Gets National Spotlight, Pat Tillman Gets Forgotten

I'm fine with the honoring of the guy who lucked out by landing the plane in the water. It was his only option and it saved lives, great. But if it didn't, landing a plane in water would not be the new "fad." What he did was a life-saving act, but what if it didn't work. He would be cast off as an idiot who thought landing in water would be safe.

I think radically sometimes. Everyone does. But my problem is that Pat Tillman was completely forgotten from the Super Bowl activities. Even when they announced Gen. Petreaus as the coin flipper, it would have fit in. But no, they forgot.

Here is a good story from USA Today about Pat Tillman being mentioned in Hall of Fame conversation.

Politics and patriotism are normally things I avoid. I love this country and feel honored that I can write all of this without being imprisoned. But the lack of Tillman coverage is inexcusable.

This is an athlete that was on the verge of being a highly paid defensive player for the Cardinals. Talented and driven, Tillman made a positive impact on youngsters and the NFL.

He passed on all of the fame and money to serve his country. I won't Disney this up any more, but the man took on a 360 degree lifestyle change to serve us all in the Armed Forces.

The Cardinals apparently did honor him prior to the game, and how could they not.

"I think he's looking down right now, and he's really excited for us," Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said earlier this week before the team's Super Bowl XLIII showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers. "And the second thing, he's really ticked off that he's not down here getting ready to play in the Super Bowl."

Strong safety Adrian Wilson, the longest tenured Cardinal, played alongside Tillman when he was a rookie in 2001, Tillman's final season in the league.

"Pat's memory will never die with the Arizona Cardinals," says Wilson, who assumed Tillman's starting role in 2002. "He's definitely a Hall of Fame Cardinal player."

But it was a real disappointment that the NFL didn't give a real-American hero the spotlight along side of the pilot who "slip and slided" the Hudson river with a commercial plane.

What Sullenberger did to save Flight 1549 is also beyond honorable. And I am not saying that he should not have been mentioned. The country needs a heroic effort like his to shake us out of our slump. But Pat Tillman should be mentioned by Al Michaels one breath later. Especially because his team was in the Super Bowl.

Cris Collinsworth, I guy who most of the time I dislike, has been mentioning Tillman's name throughout the playoff run for the Cardinals and with all of the recent Hall of Fame talk he had this to say.

"You can't tell me (Tillman's) not one of the most 200 important people in the history of the league," says Collinsworth. "If you ask me to tell the story of the National Football League, one of the stories I'm gonna tell you is the Pat Tillman story."

Hockey Fights... Day is Complete

I like hockey, I like streetfights. Therefore, using the transitive property (thank you what ever class I learned that from!) I like hockey streetfights.

This scrap took place in December and the video just made its way around. It is a bout between the Corpus Christi Ice Rays and the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the Central Hockey League.

The goalie gets railed and then the goalie picks himself up and uses his stick the way it was meant to be used, in a hard slashing motion into the sternum of the perpetrator.

It features a goalie fight, everyones favorite. But the goalies "fight" looks more like that middle school dance you went to with your equally unpopular neighbor.

The best part is the announcer who is the most excited of all. Could be be an announcer from the recently shelved EliteXC. Perhaps, but I can hear him channeling Joe Rogan.

And in case you were wondering, this is an Ice Ray.

Oklahoma Sooners: Why they will win the 2009 BCS National Championship?

So it’s finally come down to this—game day of the 2009 FedEx BCS National Championship. While there is a bit of controversy surrounding this year’s game—with Oklahoma getting in over Texas and undefeated Utah not being invited to the party—one thing is still strikingly appealing about this matchup—it features two of the best offenses in college football. There’s no need to waste time so let’s get down to the matchup shall we?

I think on paper, many people look at this match up and see how much more talented Florida’s defense is than Oklahoma’s and give them the edge. They see that both teams have prolific offensive attacks, with one having a decisive advantage on the defensive side of the ball and say, let’s go with Tim Tebow and the Gators. My mind is telling me that Florida will win this one, but for once I am picking with my heart.

Why I think the Oklahoma Sooners will win?

My heart is telling me Oklahoma. I’m not going to lie, I’ve fallen in love with Oklahoma’s offensive attack. Oklahoma’s offensive balance is probably the best I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. The Sooners’ offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson has put together a no-huddle attack which has scored the most points in college football history. Part of that has to do with the plethora of offensive talent—the biggest reason being the distributor of the football—Oklahoma’s poised and ultra-accurate sophomore of a quarterback—2008 Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford.

For a redshirt sophomore, Bradford put up scintillating numbers this year. In 2008, he completed 302 of his 442 passes(68.3 percent) for 4,464 yards while tossing in 48 touchdowns and just six interceptions. His strength lies in his tremendous footwork and his ability to freeze the defense with his eyes. He can look to his left for most of a play to hold the defenders in that side of the field, then take a quick glance to his right and fire a strike to a number of talented receivers. He’s also blessed with tremendous footwork in the pocket—his feet slide along the grass so smoothly as if he were dancing on glass. Last but not least, the quarterback position is all about processing information and Bradford is one of the smarter players in college football. He can process a high level of information without getting stressed out and always seems relaxed in the pocket. He also puts some beautiful spin on the football, with tight rotation on the pigskin when it is released from his hand.

If Oklahoma is going to win this ballgame, clearly it starts with Sam Bradford and giving him plenty of time to distribute the football and find his playmakers on offense. Oklahoma’s gargantuan and extremely talented offensive line will help to keep his jersey clean all night long. Their five starters on the offensive line average 6-5, 302 pounds! The Sooners’ offensive line boasts one consensus All-American in left guard Duke Robinson. Their offensive line also has two first team All-Big 12 players in center Jon Cooper and left tackle Phil Loadholt. The unit only allowed 11 sacks all season and was easily one of the most dominant in college football. The buffet busters up front blocked for not only one, but two 1,000 yard rushers this season(running backs Demarco Murray and Chris Brown). They also were a key ingredient in the Sooners’ offense lighting up the scoreboard for over 60 points a game over their last five games of the season, a feat no other team in college football history has accomplished.

Another way the Sooners’ offense has been able to attack opposing defenses is by limiting their substitutions with the no-huddle scheme they run. They run the no-huddle very efficiently, not only does it allow them more plays to score more points, but defenses also have fewer opportunities to make substitutions. While Florida’s defense is extremely fast, I think the no-huddle will help the Sooners’ offset that advantage by tiring them. They won’t only be tired, but the Gators’ defense will likely be caught out of position on numerous plays, which isn’t good at all if you’re trying to stop one of the most prolific offensive attacks in college football history.

Everybody wants to talk about how big of a loss it is with Oklahoma having running back Demarco Murray out due to injury. Yes, I agree it is a pretty big loss, because the numbers that Murray put up in his junior season are dazzling—he chewed up opposing defenses for over 2,000 all-purpose yards this year. What many don’t realize is that the Sooners’ offensive unit has arguably the best combination of skill players in the entire country. Everywhere you look there is a game breaking receiver, tight end, or running back.

Losing Murray would be a crushing blow to most teams, but the Sooners have running back Chris Brown, who not only rushed for over 1,100 yards this season, but he also led his team in scoring with 21 touchdowns. Sophomore running back Mossis Madu also might be one of the most overlooked players on this offense, he’s quietly rushed for 463 yards and six touchowns this season on 111 attempts. He’ll definitely get more carries in tonight’s game and the nation will get a chance to see just how speedy Madu is.

Two of the Sooners’ fastest players are receivers Manuel Johnson( 38 catches, 685 yards, nine touchdowns) and Ryan Broyles(42 catches, 661 yards, six touchdowns). Both players have excellent acceleration and can turn on the burners and leave defenders in their wake in a hurry. The best hands on the record-setting Sooner offense belong to the likes of receiver Juaquin Iglesias(69 catches, 1,092 yards, 10 touchdowns) and tight end Jermaine Gresham(58 catches, 888 yards, 12 touchdowns). While both receivers might not be as fast as Johnson or Broyles, don’t be fooled, once they get in the open field they can scoot in a hurry. This Oklahoma offense is one of the best I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. It truly has been fun to watch them. After they lost to Texas, I hoped and wished they would get their chance to get into the BCS National Championship game and sure enough, I got my wish. For once I would love to see an elite offense(Oklahoma) defeat a great defense(Florida) and modify the old adage in football: “Defense wins championships.” I would love to see that not only does a great defense win championships, but so does a great offense. If my prediction comes true—then I will get another wish—to watch the golden armed gunslinger of a quarterback(Sam Bradford) hoist the Waterford crystal skyward.

Final prediction:In the end, Oklahoma’s prolific offensive attack is simply too much for the Gator’s defense to handle. I don’t think Oklahoma’s defense will be able to stop Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin, and the Gators’ lethal offense, but it all comes down to the Oklahoma offensive attack and how it is one of the best in college football history. Sam Bradford and company outscore Tim Tebow and the Gators in one of the best national title games in history.

My Trip to the Orange Bowl: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Is it easy to get to the Orange Bowl? Of course not, it takes athleticism, determination, perseverance, drive and dedication – and I’m just talking about getting a flight down to Miami.

I’ve been going to UC football games since I was about nine years old. Both my parents went to the University of Cincinnati, and I grew up wearing red and black. I even got a job in the athletics marketing department at the university. Naturally, when the UC football team made it to their biggest bowl game in history, I had to find my way down to the game. I had to work on December 30th, so I couldn’t leave until News Years Eve. And since I’m an intern at UC, and therefore poor, I decided to fly stand-by down to Florida to save some money.

So here was my plan. Fly out of Cincinnati at 9:30 a.m. on December 31st to Sarasota, Florida. I would hang out with my family down there and ride over with them to the game on the first. Watch the Bearcats beat up on the Hokies. Then ride back to Sarasota before flying back to Cincinnati at 4:10 p.m. on January 2nd in order to be at work on January 3rd by 11 a.m. Needless to say, this didn’t happen exactly as advertised.

I got to the Cincinnati airport around 8:30 a.m. on December 31st, eager to get down to Florida. If you’ve never flown stand-by before, basically you have to wait to see if there’s extra room for you on the plane. As I watched other people board the plane, it became apparent that seats were going to come at a premium. I couldn’t help but feel rejected, like a fat kid being picked last for dodge ball. Of the four remaining people, two seats were given out, and I wasn’t either of them.

So, I needed a new plan. I got booked for the 12:45 p.m. flight out of Cincinnati. First the flight was in Concourse A, and it was moved to Concourse B, and then it was moved back to Concourse A. If walking back and forth wasn’t bad enough, the plane was delayed to 1:15 p.m. The flight continued to be delayed in 10 minute increments until after 2:00 p.m., when I was told there was little chance I’d make the flight. Luckily, two people missed a connecting flight in Indianapolis, so I had a seat.

I arrive in Florida and jump into a cab, driven by a woman, which seemed odd. Turns out, she was odd. She pointed out the best spot to pick up hookers. She talked about how plants were people. She laughed and talked to herself. I decided to tip her four bucks just so I’d never see her again.

Going to the game was easy enough because I slept the entire three-and-a-half hour ride. I guess I should thank my dad for driving. Thanks dad. Dolphin Stadium was incredible. I had great lower level seats, and it was thrilling to see the Bearcats take the field in the 75th Fed Ex Orange Bowl.

The first possession for the Bearcats went according to my plan. They drove down the field and scored with ease. Sadly, that was the only scoring they did that game as Virginia Tech beat Cincinnati 20 to 7. Not at all what I wanted, but I’m glad I got to experience the BCS.

I arrive back at the Sarasota airport around 3:15 p.m. on January 2 for my 4:10 p.m. flight. I go talk to the gate agent only to be told that it doesn’t look good for my stand-by flight. I hang out for awhile and things start to improve. The plane is waiting for a dad and daughter to get through security, but there’s only one seat, which means the two would have to take separate flights. And there’s no way the dad would fly without his daughter. I’m told that if they pass on the seat it’s all mine. But just my luck, this nine-year-old daughter is brave enough to fly alone and have her grandma pick her up in Cincinnati. Damn it.
So, I needed a new plan. I got a 6:45 p.m. flight to Atlanta in the hopes of catching a 9:50 p.m. flight to Cincinnati. I’m the very last person allowed onto the flight to Atlanta. I knew there was a good chance I might get stranded in Atlanta, but I wanted to try to get to work on January 3 by 11:00 a.m.

Atlanta was crazy. So many flights and all of them seemed over booked. It became quickly apparent I wasn’t going to make my flight, which was delayed past 11:00 p.m. I have a friend from college who lives in Atlanta. Thanks for the place to crash Chris, I really appreciate it. I also had my first Manhattan, which I liked, mainly because I like whiskey.

I wake up at 4:15 a.m. on January 3 in order to make the 6:35 a.m. flight to Cincinnati. That means I got exactly one-and-a-half hours of sleep. I get to the airport, and it doesn’t look good. There are six people in front of me on the stand-by list. Somehow my initials make it onto the screen, and I get in line to board. Apparently that wasn’t my initials but someone else. I go back and sit down to hear the best words of the trip, “All stand-by passengers have been cleared.” Yes, I’m getting home.
Luckily, I slept on plane. I got home, showered, changed and went to work. My dad asked me later that day if it was all worth it. The hell if I know. At least I got home. The Orange Bowl turned out to be the dull point of my travels.

I'm stuffed and the holidays are finally through, but the Internet doesn't sleep.

Chris Kluwe, punter of the playoff-bound Minnesota Vikings, is either a savvy businessman or a huge nerd.

According to the popular video game blog Kotaku Kluwe is pondering changing his name to Chris "World of Warcraft."

"Back when Chad Johnson changed his name to Ocho Cinco, I told the guys at 93X that I was going to change my name to Chris 'World of Warcraft' " Kluwe said. "They said that's too long. So they started calling me Chris 'Warcraft.' I could make a lot of money if I changed my name to that."

But it turns out that the punter feels that he is a video game expert. He says his radio show attracts more people that want him to talk gaming and not kicking.

"I think more people like to hear me talk about playing video games than football," said Kluwe. "I've played video games since I was 4 years old. I play them a lot more than I kick a football. I kick the ball about 45 minutes a day. I play video games about five or six hours a day. But that's OK. I don't watch TV."

The Vikings are just hoping the rest of Kluwe's teammates don't take on the names of their favorite video games.

The commitment of college football coaches across the country is a very big one, to say the least. Every man on this list has had to spend hours and hours away from their families, missing holidays, birthdays, and many other important family functions that every day college football fans take forgranted. They spend long hours every day going through activities such as team meetings, film breakdowns, and coaches' meetings.

The demands of a college football coach are greater than many people believe and alot of times people don't get to truly appreciate the product that is placed out there on gameday. Their passion for the game is at an extremely high level because they must spent so much of their daily lives to one thing: football. That's not even considering the fact that players get in trouble during the off-season and place a tremendous amount of unncecessary stress on their coaches. If it was all about what was happening between the lines, then the life of a college football coach would be much easier. But it's not and it will continue to be that way because of the intense media scrutiny and pressure that comes with making millions of dollars every year.

College football coaches must wear many hats, they must be able to please the boosters, the president and athletic director of their University, the media, and last but not least, the fans of their team. They also have to deal with a variety of people in the academic arena from teachers and faculty members to academic advisors and tutors. More and more pressure is being placed on college football coaches to make sure their players successfully complete their academic careers.

One question posed on the award's website: http://www.coachoftheyear.com/. If a coach is fired mid-season, should he continue coaching the team through the end of the season? I think the answer to that question should be completely up to the coach. He's spent an endless amount of his time, breaking down film, hitting the recruiting trail, practicing during two a days, and many other activities that require a ton of time, so if he can handle finishing out the season then he should. If he feels like it would cause too much mental anguish for him to finish, then I think he should step down. I just don't think it's for the "good of the program" for a coach to step down mid-season.

The players will have to adjust to new personalities and new schemes in the middle of the season, which is usually an extremely difficult transition. Coaches often speak of putting the "team" before themselves and I think if a coach quit on his team in the middle of the season, then that's putting himself before the team and not following his own advice. Coaches love to talk about sacrificing individual needs and wants for the good of the team and the program and I think stepping down would tell your kids, "It's okay for me to be selfish, but not you guys." No coach in college football wants to set a double standard like that. For your players to want to sacrifice all of their blood, sweat, and tears for you on the gridiron, then you must show them that you are all equals.

If I was going to vote for a head coach on the finalists list: I would choose Kyle Whittingham of Utah simply because the Utes have had such a dazzling campaign this season. He led the Utes to a sparkling 12-0 campaign this year and a BCS berth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Utah completed its best season since Urban Meyer was the head man in Salt Lake City, posting two wins over top 20 opponents in TCU(13-10) and arch-rival BYU(48-24). The Utes also defeated two BCS conference opponents in Michigan(25-23) and Oregon State(31-28).

Utah's Louie Sakoda is arguably the best kicker in college football.

Under Whittingham's tutelage, Utah's kicker Louie Sakoda was recently named a first-team All-American kicker by the AFCA. In doing so, Sakoda became the first player in school history to make a major All-America team at two different positions(kicker and punter). A top three finalist for both the Lou Groza(kicking) and Ray Guy(punting) awards, Sakoda is second in the entire nation in kick-scoring points with 115 and has connected on an eye-gouging 91.3 percent(21-23) of his field goal attempts this season. He nailed several clutch kicks throughout the season, none of them being bigger than his 37-yarder as time expired to lift the Utes to victory over the Oregon State Beavers(31-28) and keep their BCS dreams alive.

Utah quarterback Brian Johnson made several key plays throughout the season to ensure that his Utah Utes kept their BCS dreams alive. The Utes will face Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on January 2nd.

Under Whittingham's watch, Utah has also produced one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Mountain West Conference history in quarterback Brian Johnson. Johnson has been the catalyst to the Utes' spectacular season, completing 68.8 percent of his passes for over 2,600 yards, while tossing in 24 touchdowns and just nine interceptions. The senior is the undisputed leader of the Utah football team and without his production in critical moments, this magical season clearly would not have been possible.

Ok, the Browns' season was over before this but not only does it put a "snappy" ending to all hope, but it ends this man's reign.

So now with that out of the way. How do we salvage the season. And by salvage, I mean put an actual QB in that QB position. There are 1.5 options.

Option 1: The "Veteran"

PEOPLE, KEN "Eyebrows" DORSEY IS NOT A VETERAN.

Broadcasters keep calling him that. FACT: He is the oldest QB on the Browns' roster. FICTION: He is good.

Dorsey is only 27 years old and has been in the league for six years. He was on that Miami Hurricane team that lost the National Championship to Ohio State in 2002. NOT A VETERAN.

Option .5: Giving the Wildcat thinger ma-bob a try

Taking Off the Sports Hat for a Second...

I like to avoid the "pop-culture" scene, as those days have passed me by. No more TRL for me, I would rather watch the History Channel (in HD of course).

But, sometimes... sometimes things so monumental happen. You experience them and they change your life. Well, Japanese Metal has changed me. For the better? Well, we will have to see.

I hope this makes the turkey go down smooth. Happy Thanksgiving (not that there are ANY Thanksgiving undertones here).
